1) Scylla- she was swimming in the ocean and Poseidon fell in love with her, so his wife turned her into a monster with six heads and twelve legs.
Charybdis- she helped her father, Poseidon, with land oveer Zeus, so he became angry and made her a monster with incredible thirst.

2) Ulysses thought that if they sailed directly through the middle without going off course the slightest bit, they would be out of reach from Scylla's arms and far enough away to avoid being sucked into Charybdis' whirlpool.

3) He forgets that the oars stick out a great amount.

4) Scylla grabs the oars and pulls the ship in, grabbing six men and eats them.
